Imagine what he will do as president.Shortly after returning to Congress in 1997, Congressman Ron Paul attended a county fair where he met with some Texas students who were active in agricultural education programs such as 4-H and Future Farmers of America (FFA). Congressman Paul was outraged to learn that these students would have to pay taxes on the money they made from raising and selling livestock as part of these programs. Dr. Paul stated, "These kids are trying to better themselves, earn some money, save some money, and what does Congress do? We pick on these kids by taxing them. It is truly amazing that with all the hand-wringing in Congress over the alleged need to further restrict liberty and grow the size of government ‘for the children’ we would continue to tax young people who are trying to lead responsible lives and prepare for the future.” “These children are not even old enough to vote, yet we are forcing them to pay taxes! What ever happened to no taxation without representation? No wonder young people are so cynical about government!" Congressman Paul took a stand and introduced the Agriculture Education Freedom Act (H.R. 1720 in the 110th Congress). This bill repeals all federal taxes on the money earned by students who sell livestock raised as part of an education program such as 4-H or FFA. Although a majority of his colleagues refuse to repeal this tax, he will continue to fight for these young people until the IRS stops punishing them for doing the right thing. As a congressman, Ron Paul has fought to stop the government from taxing children who try to better themselves by participating in agricultural education programs.
